Report of Career and Membership Committee
With the aims of driving the new generation of social workers to understand more about our profession and equiping them to get prepared for entering into the field, the Career & Membership Committee is conducting a series of events and activities for the new generation of social workers zealously.
The committee conducted two interview workshops on 13 July and 15 August, 2009. 42 and 53 students from Caritas Francis Hsu College and The Hong Kong College of Technology joined us respectively. During the workshops, our Council Members shared topics on techniques for interview, like, Do’s and Don’ts while preparing Covering Letter, CV, Interviews and written tests with the participants. Besides, Council Members pretended to be interviewers and half of the participants experienced in such mock interviews. Recommendations were given by our Council Members afterwards.
The participants reflected that they had gained a lot in the progress as most of them don't have experience on job interviews. Moreover, they said that they are willing to have more preparation before hunting jobs.
Apart from the Interview Workshops, another event targeted at fresh graduated social work students were organized on 8 Oct named “The Chief of Social Workers – The Freshmen’s’ Upgrading Strategy”. Participants got to know more friends in different tertiary institutes. Most importantly, participants got the latest information of the social work field from the sharing of the frontline Social Workers in order to plan for their own career path at an early stage.
More than twenty social work students participated in the event, including some year one Master Social Work students in Chinese University of Hong Kong and Year one Social Work Students of Shue Yan University.
Firstly, we had some warm up activities. Then we had Mr. LING Wai Hang, our latest Outstanding Junior Social Workers, shared topics on the latest information on the social work field, different ways for learning to be a social workers and his social work career. Groups were conducted leading by different social workers with different experiences and backgrounds. During the session, they had in-depth sharing on the decisions for choosing Social Work as their career and the strategies for their career paths.
Lastly, participants were introduced with the Association’s work and the future events like, “Placement Project”, “Social Work Student Conference among China, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong” and the “2010 Joint World Conference”, etc. We were inspired by the participants’ participation and their sincere sharing. It was a wonderful evening.
We wish them every success in seeking the jobs and look forward to have more meaningful sharing among students in the future.
