本會創辦於一九四九年，並於一九七五年註冊成為「有限公司」。本會以「團結社工、發展專業」為宗旨，目的為提高本港社會工作的專業水準、培養優秀的專業道德和守則、就社會工作的專業地位及有關社會福利政策向有關當局提供意見。
